Choosing the Right Battery Lawn Mower for Your Garden

Updated: 7 days ago

I’m not really a lawn-mowing kind of gardener. My skills shine in the beds and borders—planting, weeding, pruning, and caring for plants. Generally, my clients have someone else who handles the lawns and hedges. However, for those with smaller lawns, I do cut the grass. It truly makes a difference in the overall look of a garden.

Up to now, I’ve used my clients’ mowers, which tend to be corded electric “Flymo” types. They’re okay, but juggling the extension cable can be a hassle. Let’s be honest, it’s a bit of a health and safety nightmare!

So, I’ve decided it’s time to buy my own battery lawn mower. It’s much easier to transport than a petrol mower, which is too big for my needs anyway. Plus, it’s much safer than a corded electric mower.

Why Battery Makes Sense for Me (And Maybe for You Too!)

No More Cables

I can move freely without worrying about snagging a lead on a shrub or stretching an extension across a path. It’s such a relief!

Quiet Operation

Battery mowers are much quieter than petrol ones—and even quieter than some corded electrics. I love the peace it brings while I’m working in the garden.

Lightweight and Easy to Handle

I don’t want to wrestle with a machine that weighs a tonne. Many gardens aren’t level, so a lightweight mower is perfect for managing a sloping lawn.

Low Maintenance

At least compared to petrol mowers! This is a huge plus for me.

What Are the Options?

I’m starting to look at what’s available and what would be best for me. I even asked Copilot (yes, the dreaded AI!) to help review the market. I thought I’d share the results with you!

Top 5 Battery Lawn Mowers in the UK (September 2025)

A Practical Comparison for Gardeners

Here’s a concise roundup of the best battery-powered lawn mower models available in the UK in 2025. These insights come from test reviews, garden publications, and user feedback. Models are ranked by price, reliability, and user reviews, making it easier to find the right fit for your gardening needs.

Model Highlights

Husqvarna Aspire LC34-P4A

This mower stands out for its blend of performance, ergonomic design, and compatibility with the Power For All Alliance battery system. It is praised for quiet operation, easy assembly, and excellent trimming across varied terrain. The battery covers up to 500sqm, and its lightweight yet robust build makes it a favourite for both beginners and experienced gardeners. Minor drawbacks include hard wheels and limited height adjustment.

Worx Nitro WG749E 40V

Regularly rated a “Best Buy,” this mower features a wide 46cm cut, 40-minute runtime, adjustable speed, and is part of the versatile PowerShare battery system. Users appreciate its power on tough grass and its convenient vertical storage. However, it’s a bit heavy, and the collection bag can be fiddly.

Ego LM1702E-SP 42cm

Ego’s self-propelled mower is noted for its premium quality, adjustable telescopic handle, and storage flexibility. The 42cm cutting width and self-propulsion are ideal for medium to large lawns, especially those with slopes. It comes with a five-year warranty. The lack of a mulching option and a higher upfront cost are the main considerations.

Webb Eco WEV20X2LM43B4X

A great value choice, this mower delivers on versatility, durability, and price. It includes two 20V batteries (up to 60 minutes runtime), a 43cm cutting width, and handles uneven lawns well. Owners highlight its quietness and comfortable grip, with only minor issues like the battery charge indicator.

Stihl RMA 448 RV

Aimed at professionals and keen gardeners, the Stihl RMA 448 RV offers rear roller striping, mulching, and a mono-handle for easy adjustment. It covers around 340sqm, has a 46cm cutting width, and is highly reliable. The grass box can be fiddly, and there’s no safety key, but it’s an excellent choice for top-end performance.

Honourable Mentions

  • Mountfield Electress 34Li: Affordable, long battery life

  • Gardena PowerMax: Lightweight, great for edge cutting

  • Kress 40V 37cm: Delivers an excellent striped finish and great pickup

So What Am I Buying?

I’m not really sure yet. I still need to do some research. I’m planning to wait until the Black Friday sales to try to get a good deal. I’ll update you then!

In the meantime, I hope this guide helps you consider your options. Choosing the right mower can truly enhance your gardening experience. After all, a well-kept garden is a joy to behold!

Update:

Well I didn't go for any of the options in this blog in the end!

I bought a Greenworks 40v 35cm cordless mower. It was 40% off in the Black Friday sales and cost me £179.99. We'll see how it gets on next year.
